Amazon crashes on “Prime Day”

One of KSL’s listeners shared this screenshot from a mobile device of the error message she got when trying to shop.

SEATTLE — Apparently unable to cope with the onslaught of online shoppers looking for deals, Amazon.com appears to have crashed in the midst of its highly-anticipated “Prime Day.”

For some users, clicking on a link that says “shop all deals” merely forces the page to reload again, but does not take the user to the deals. In other cases, users saw the famous “dogs of Amazon” photos that the site uses when it experiences a complete outage. As a result, it’s unclear exactly how widespread this outage is.

Prime Day was supposed to start at 1 p.m. mountain time. As soon as 1:05, however, the site was already having trouble.

This year, Amazon planned to extend its annual promotion to 36 hours as well as partnering with Whole Foods. The company has said it has more than 100 million paid Prime members worldwide, and has recently increased the price of the program.

Prime Day was created by Amazon in 2015 for its 20th anniversary.
