OPINION: Tone down your X-Mas lights

Dec 13, 2018, 2:24 PM

Court of public opinion: There are so many things out there that you can legally do, but that doesn’t mean you should do them. This has to do with those individuals who get so caught up in the holiday experience that they decorate every inch of their home in Christmas lights and displays. They leave no space left unlit. No blade of grass, no window space, nothing can be left dark.

People spend thousands of dollars on these lights and displays and for many, it’s a family tradition. But for me…it’s too much! I’ve had neighborhoods with over the top light displays and many people across the country also think it’s gotten out of hand.

The growing frustration brings up an interesting question. Is this a free speech issue? Is this a freedom of religion issue? You have to remember, your rights are your rights until they start to impede on the rights of other people. There are no laws against light displays so I want to make this a conversation about courtesy. Consideration for your neighbors should be high on your list during the holiday season.

If you’re going to do this, please get permission from your neighbors. Or move out to the country! Move somewhere where you can do this without imposing on those around you.
