Wood stove rebates run out in Salt Lake in less than a day

More Americans are struggling to pay their energy bills.  Nearly 1.5 million more U.S. households ...

The current natural gas price for Utah resident dipped 15.03% from last month but is up 18.88% from one year ago, according YCharts.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Division of Air Quality says a federal grant for Utahns to convert from wood-burning stoves has been “encumbered.”

The $2.5-million grant from the EPA ran out in under a day.

“Utahns just love a really good deal, and it’s really convenient to switch from wood-burning to natural gas,” said Mark Berger, air quality policy section manager.

“On top of that, it’s a really good incentive.”

Berger says DAQ received 901 applications for $2,800 rebates from people in Salt Lake, Tooele, Davis and Weber Counties.

Another $5 million is available for residents in Utah and Cache counties.

“Utah County is going really fast, too,” Berger said. “I don’t think we’ll have rebates there for too much longer, maybe a few more days.”

Applications can be submitted through stoves.utah.gov.

Berger says one wood burning stove pollutes as much as 550 natural gas stoves, making up 6% of Utah’s PM 2.5 pollution.
