Utah State University issues campus-wide safety alert for one man

Oct 31, 2018, 6:41 PM | Updated: 7:05 pm

LOGAN – An unusual kind of security alert has been issued for students of Utah State University. Campus Police are telling students to be on the look out for one specific person.

This particular alert stands out for one specific reason.  University Spokesman Tim Vitale says, “I believe it is the first time we’ve sent out an alert about a named individual.”

The man in question is Lonnie Nyman, who was recently charged with sexual exploitation of a minor.  Prosecutors say Nyman used the app Grindr to arrange to meet a boy for sex.  The boy reportedly became uncomfortable after meeting with Nyman, and left before any sexual activity happen.

Nyman recently posted bail and was released from the Cache County Jail.

Nyman is not a student at USU, however, “He has a personal connection to someone who is a student and, given the information we had, we thought it was necessary to send out a safety alert,” according to Vitale.

The alert tells students not to approach Nyman, that he, “may pose a threat” to the campus community.  School officials are considering taking more steps to prevent Nyman from coming onto school grounds.

“We are looking at additional actions we might be able to take,” Vitale says.
