OPINION: X-Mas lights over the top or am I a Scrooge?

This New Jersey family will be fined nearly $3,000 per night that they have their Christmas lights up, in part, because their neighbors are ticked off because their elaborate display draws huge crowds.
With big crowds come lots of cars. The family will now have to cover the costs of extra police presence and get a shuttle that’ll bring spectators to and from their neighborhood.
On top of that, they’re a huge drain to the electric grid. This family sucks up nearly $1,300 per month in electric bills.
The family claims that it’s their First Amendment rights to put up the lights. I say, just because you can put up Christmas lights doesn’t mean you should.
I lived down the street from a family that did this, and it was the biggest hassle in the world. I’d have either drive down the sidewalk or on the wrong side of the road just to get to my house.
If you’re going to do something this extravagant, you should get all of your neighbors’ approval. It’s called common courtesy.
