Herbert’s sales tax cut met with Republican skepticism

SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert wants to lower Utah’s sales tax rate to 1.75% as part of his tax overhaul package, but his fellow Republicans on Utah’s Capitol Hill are pushing back.
And the proposal, outlined in the State of the State address, is less than a week old.
Heber City Representative Tim Quinn told the Republican Caucus Thursday that the math “doesn’t add up.”
House Majority Leader Francis Gibson told the Deseret News that it’s the governor’s “job to paint a portrait. It’s our job to fund the reality…Bless his heart.”
Some are taking that last part as a veiled insult.
But the rest of the Governor’s proposed tax cuts are on the table with many lawmakers saying they’re tackling income taxes first.
