LAYTON, Utah — Police have confirmed the man shot and killed Thursday night in Layton is a police officer from Idaho Falls, Idaho. He’s been identified as Blaine Reed.

Layton police say Reed, 35, is the man who burst into a home near 300 W. Park Ave. around 6:45 p.m., uninvited, to confront the homeowner about an alleged relationship with Reed’s ex-girlfriend.

As of Friday morning, there were no arrests in the case. Layton police say the confrontation turned physical, then the homeowner, a 34-year-old man, shot Reed several times, then immediately called 911.

Reed was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman says the homeowner, whose name has not been released, has been cooperating with investigators. The homeowner is not a police officer or other law enforcement agent, Lyman says.

A spokesperson for the Idaho Falls Police Department confirmed Reed had joined the department in 2015, but had been on administrative leave in recent months over criminal charges related to a “domestic incident” in Jefferson County, Idaho. The department also released a statement reacting to news of Reed’s death.

“We are saddened by the news of his passing and the events surrounding this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved,” the statement said.

Court records from Idaho do not offer details about the domestic violence incident that led to Reed being placed on administrative leave, but the charges, filed in December, included attempted strangulation and assault, related to something that happened in October.

Reed was a recipient of the Idaho Falls Police Department’s “Life-Saving” Award for rescuing a 25-year-old man who overdosed in 2016, the East Idaho News reported.
