SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah officials say they’ve identified multiple people who were involved in writing a racist slur on a car windshield shortly before Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations on campus Monday.

The racist message was pressed into the frost sitting on someone’s car windshield, so it wasn’t permanent. However, school officials are considering it a serious act.

School officials respond to racist slur

In a letter to students and faculty Tuesday, officials said they’ve identified those they believe are responsible and “appropriate actions” are being taken. But, the university hasn’t released details on what those actions will be and haven’t made clear if those involved were students.

A letter from university senior leadership said the racist slur “evokes white supremacy and reminds us that a violent, racist past is still with us today.”

University spokeswoman Annalisa Purser declined to say whether the car belonged to a U student and/or a person of color. But, she said the university is still investigating whether the car was intentionally targeted or not.
