Stone removal to begin on historic Salt Lake Temple

SALT LAKE CITY — A number of stones on the historic Salt Lake Temple are about to be removed after they were displaced during the recent 5.7 earthquake that shook much of northern Utah.

Renovations had been taking place to upgrade the temple’s ability to withstand just such seismic events.

Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff says that there will be a crane installed on the south side of the temple that will begin work on removing the stones shortly.

In addition to the displaced stones that will be removed, Woodruff says that the damaged angel Moroni that sits atop the east spire will also be removed.

Similar plans were in place to remove some of the stones as part of the church’s process of installing base isolators and restoring the 127-year-old building’s interior.

The Salt Lake Temple has been closed since December 29, 2019.
