SALT LAKE CITY — Neighborhoods in two zip codes in Salt Lake City include some of the hardest hit by COVID-19 in the state.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall called them COVID-19 “hot spots.”

The neighborhoods in question are in the zip codes 84104 and 84116, according to the COVID-19 Data Dashboard published by the Salt Lake County Health Department.

“Through that data,” Mendenhall told Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News on KSL NewsRadio, “we’re seeing consistently that our city’s west side, in the Jordan Meadows, Rose Park, Poplar Grove and Glendale neighborhoods, are the hardest hit in the state of Utah.”

“Exactly why that is … I’m sure we’ll have researchers dig into that. But we have a lot of front line workers in these communities, people who don’t have the options necessarily of telecommuting and don’t economically have the option of not going to work.”

Anchor Maria Shilaos asked Mendenhall what residents should do in response to the information.

“If you live anywhere in Salt Lake City, we hope you will take COVID-19 very seriously still,” Mendenhall said. “We are still the hardest hit in the state of Utah. Wear a mask anytime you’re out in public spaces where you come into contact or in close proximity to other people in public.”

Mendenhall added, any time you can stay home, you should, to protect yourself and others.

How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus

COVID-19 coronavirus spreads person to person. It is a virus that is similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet)
  • If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities.)
  • Get a flu shot.
