SALT LAKE CITY — Not since 1979 has it been this hot, on this particular day, in Salt Lake City.

Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service reported that it was 99 degrees Fahrenheit at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

It was not unexpected. KSL meteorologist Kevin Eubank reported on Friday that Utahns would see record-breaking temperatures across the state.

Because of low relative humidity and the chance for wind gusts, the National Weather Service has a red flag warning in effect for much of the state.

A red flag warning indicates that three things could combine to create increased fire danger: low humidity, warm temperatures, and stronger winds. So the National Weather Service has offered a reminder to those who are headed out for Labor Day activities including camping.

As is typically the case, southern portions of Utah will be even warmer than the northern half of the state. An excessive heat warning for lower Washington county including Zion National Park is now in effect through Monday evening.
