DAVIS COUNTY — The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is advising drivers to plan ahead for heavy delays on northbound I-15 in Davis County Sunday. The northbound lane in Clearfield will be reduced to one lane and U.S. 89 will be down to one lane in both directions near Kaysville.

Construction in Clearfield

Beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, one lane will close between 650 North in Clearfield and Riverdale Road. However, both lanes will close from Sunday at 2 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 7, at 6 a.m. UDOT suggests drivers avoid the area entirely if possible. If not, prepare for extra travel time.

The closures will allow crews to remove the northbound crossover, UDOT said Thursday.

“The crossover, or lane split, has been in place to allow work on the I-15 Express Lanes widening project to continue in the freeway median,” said UDOT. With winter right around the corner, UDOT is detaching the crossover to make room for snow removal operations.

More restrictions on I-15 in Davis County

From 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, U.S. 89 will be reduced to one lane in both directions between Mutton Hollow Road in Kaysville and Nicholls Road in Fruit Heights. UDOT crews on the U.S. 89 reconstruction project will direct drivers to newly-completed pavement.

To avoid traffic, UDOT recommends using Oak Hills Drive or Main Street as alternate routes.

The reason for the closures is so crews can reconnect U.S. 89 to 200 North/400 North and Mountain Road.

To reconnect the roads, the west leg of the U.S. 89 intersection at 200 North/400 North will close from Friday at 11:59 p.m. to Sunday at 5 a.m. Then, the east leg of the intersection at Mountain Road will close from Sunday at 11:59 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.

Drivers can access U.S. 89 via Crestwood Road or Green Road by using the east frontage road as an alternate.

Historic road work

Expanding the I-15 Express Lanes and finishing the U.S. 89 reconstruction are both on UDOT’s current list of Top-10 most significant statewide projects.

“The I-15 Express Lanes project is widening I-15, extending the Express Lanes and repairing sections of I-15 from Layton Parkway to Riverdale Road,” UDOT said. “These improvements will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide a smoother ride for drivers.”

The projected completion date for the project is fall 2021.

However, the work on U.S. 89 in Davis County is the largest active highway project in the state. At the end of the four-year project, U.S. 89 will be six lanes with three lanes in each direction from Main Street in Farmington to S.R. 193 in Layton.

“It will also build four new interchanges at 200 North/400 North, Oak Hills Drive, Gordon Avenue, and Antelope Drive; extend Gordon Avenue approximately 3 miles east to U.S. 89; and add two new bridges over the highway at Nicholls Road and Crestwood Road,” explained UDOT.
