SALT LAKE CITY — A SWAT standoff in Magna has ended with a suspect being taken into custody saying the suspect is connected to a homicide in Salt Lake earlier this week.

According to police, they tracked a suspect from the homicide to an apartment in Magna. They arrived Tuesday afternoon and the suspect went inside an apartment after spotting police.
At that time, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s SWAT unit arrived and attempted to negotiate for the man to exit the building. Officers said those negotiations went back-and-forth for around 11 hours.
Eventually, Unified Police arrived on Tuesday night with their SWAT team. They executed a plan for the man to surrender and were able to take him into custody after a couple of hours.
“It’s a long time for a SWAT event to go,” explains Lieutenant Manfred Lassig with Unified Police. “It works out to the best that everyone is alive.”

Evacuating the apartment complex
Throughout the negotiations, there were no reported injuries and it appears that neither side fired a lethal weapon.
Police did believe that the suspect may have had weapons in the apartment, so units on the same level, above and below were evacuated for over 12 hours.
“He was non-compliant all the way through since he retreated and barricaded in his apartment,” says Lt. Lassig.
Police have not yet identified the suspect, only saying he is connected to the Monday morning homicide in Salt Lake City.
