Herriman honors fallen officers for Peace Officers Memorial Day

HERRIMAN, Utah — Officials in Herriman participated in Peace Officers Memorial Day by placing placards on the trail surrounding Blackridge Reservoir, naming Utah police officers who died in the line of duty.

One woman who spoke with KSL 5 TV reporter Alex Cabrero said that some of the placards dated back to the mid-1800s.

“Which is really fascinating,” said Marnie Benson. “At the same time, it’s really moving.”

Peace Officers Memorial Day falls on May 15th each year. Proclaimed by President Kennedy in 1962,  it is intended to pay tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who died or were injured in the line of duty.

The day is part of National Police Week which was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962.

This year, Herriman’s K-9 officer Hondo was part of the memorial. Hondo was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2020.
