SALT LAKE CITY — A weak tornado touched down in North Salt Lake on Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) out of Salt Lake City, the tornado first touched down in North Salt Lake at 6:28 p.m. It was spotted at Redwood Road and 900 west. 

It traveled northeast with strong wind gusts

The tornado traveled northeast through industrial and residential areas, producing wind gusts of 65 to 85 mph. 

As it continued to travel northeast, it hit its peak intensity near Woods Cross with wind gusts between 86 and 110 mph. The Woods Cross Public Works building and a construction site suffered damage from the tornado. In addition, it also uprooted a healthy mature tree. 

The tornado made a second touchdown in a field around 800 West in Woods Cross.  Minor property damage and tree damage were reported along its path.

The tornado then dissipated near 1500 South and I-15 at 6:34 p.m.

The NWS rated this tornado as an EF1 with wind gusts as high as 110 mph. The tornado was tracked for 2.5 miles for almost seven minutes.

Despite the severe weather, the NWS says tornadoes are rare in the West.
