Lauren was a student-athlete, a member of the University of Utah’s Track and Field team. She was 21 years old when she met Melvin Rowland at a bar.
Later, McCluskey made several reports to campus officials, campus police, and city police about threats she was continuously receiving from Rowland, who she briefly dated. On October 22, 2018, police said she was murdered by that man.
The Lauren McCluskey Foundation has asked universities nationwide to host awareness activities.
“By holding a Lauren McCluskey memorial/awareness walk on your campus, you’re being proactive about reaching students, and preparing the next generation of adults to be more prepared to listen, believe, and respond to reports of dating violence and stalking,” said the foundation

The foundation encourages the walk not only to honor the U of U student’s life but to empower college students to show up for one another.
By sponsoring a walk, the foundation said that students experiencing their own domestic violence situations may better understand that they have a community behind them.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
