SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Utah Transit Authority bus driver suffered significant injuries Tuesday night after being assaulted by an unprovoked attacker.
UTA spokesman Carl Arky says the driver was taking a break at the Millcreek Station. The incident occurred around 11 p.m.
“Our guy was just doing his job,” Arky told KSL NewsRadio.
Arky says the suspect came wandering up the street prior to the attack. He was not a passenger on the bus. The driver was transported to the hospital but has since been released.
“They weren’t life-threatening, but they were significant,” Arky said. “Fortunately, they were able to release him, and he was able to go home, but that doesn’t diminish the gravity of the situation.”
The suspect has been identified as Cameron Ward. UTA bus driver has been identified as Neil Uemura.
South Salt Lake Police later took Ward into custody.
According to KSL.com, UTA says the suspect was booked into jail for investigating of disarming a police officer, assault on a peace officer in uniform and interfering with an officer from what is believed to have been a separate incident earlier Tuesday.
Arky says the incident is still under investigation.
