SALT LAKE CITY — A correctional officer was hospitalized Monday after being assaulted in a restricted housing unit at the Utah State Correctional Facility, officials said.
According to a statement from the Utah Department of Corrections, the officer was released later the same day. The identity of the officer is not being released.
No specific information about how the correctional officer was harmed was provided. However, the UDC’s Law Enforcement Bureau is investigating the incident to determine potential charges against the inmate.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the Antelope Housing Unit. The housing unit is a maximum-security facility for male inmates. Those inmates housed at the Antelope Building are taking part in a structured housing program. According to the correctional facility’s website, it is meant to assist an inmate’s move to general population housing.
The Utah State Correctional Facility opened in July 2022. It is located five miles west of the Salt Lake City International Airport and can house a little less than 3,000 inmates.
