Purina voluntarily recalled its Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) dry dog food after two reports of dogs showing signs of vitamin D toxicity. (Purina.com)

ST. LOUIS — A prescription dry dog food made by Nestle Purina Petcare Company was voluntarily recalled this week for potentially toxic levels of vitamin D.

The Food and Drug Administration and Purina recalled Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) after learning that two dogs showed signs of Vitamin D toxicity after eating the dog food.

Veterinary clinics and other retailers sold the food throughout the United States.

Below, are the UPC and production codes in question.

According to the  FDA dogs that have eaten too much vitamin D may lose their appetite, drink and urinate more frequently, drool excessively or vomit. They may also lose weight.

The following graphic indicates where you should look on the bag of dog food to see if you’ve purchased one of the questionable bags.

Nestlé Purina PetCare Company is voluntarily recalling select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.

The FDA also reports that vitamin-related toxicity can develop gradually over time. It is dependent on the concentration of Vitamin D in the food.

If you bought one of these bags of pet food, please stop feeding it to your pet. Also, discard in a container that prevents access by other animals.
