Bill adjusting teacher raises receives favorable recommendation in Utah Senate committee

SALT LAKE CITY — A bill aimed at adding value to teacher raises passed favorably in a Utah Senate Education Committee Friday.
Teachers are already looking at a $6,000 dollar annual raise with the new voucher law. S.B. 183 sponsor Senate Majority Leader Evan Vickers said his bill would add to that raise each year if Utah’s weighted pupil unit, WPU, goes up.
WPU is what the state uses to determine how much to put into the public education system.
“It takes those two items, the teacher salary supplement program and the educator salary portion in 215, rises them above the line and ties them to the WPU so they would continue to increase as the WPU goes up.”
Vickers also said teachers would only lose the supplement if they get three consecutive unsatisfactory evaluations rather than just one.
“It’s quite simple, it’s a short bill, but it’s very profound in the effect. Especially on our teachers that have been working so hard in the education community,” Vickers said.
