SALT LAKE CITY — If you haven’t filed your tax return yet this year you’re not alone. Salt Lake City residents are the third worst procrastinators when it comes to filing on time.

The reasons people give for not filing tax returnson time? “It’s too time consuming, too complicated … I won’t get a refund,” according to the website ChamberofCommerce.org.

Forty-one percent of Gen-Z’s don’t like filing taxes on time. And 21% of baby boomers are late filers. Since Utah has one of the youngest populations of any state in the union, Salt Lake City is among the top three worst filing procrastinators.

Only residents of Atlanta, GA, and Orlando, FL file later than people in Salt Lake. The good news for procrastinators is that the deadline to file this year is on April 18 due to a holiday weekend.

Other key findings from the study include:

  • 31% of Americans say they procrastinate and wait until the last minute to file their taxes;
  • nearly one-quarter (24%) expect their refund to be less than what they received last year; and
  • 69% don’t know that Tax Day falls on April 18 this year.
