Provo police mistakenly assist in detaining 16-year-old boy

PROVO, Utah — A Provo police officer mistakenly detained a 16-year-old boy while searching for a suspect Sunday, Feb. 26.
According to a press release, the Provo Police Department was assisting the Utah State Bail Enforcement Agency in the apprehension of a suspect at the Ice Peaks Arena, in Provo. The suspect was wanted for aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person.
At approximately 5:25 p.m., Bondsmen located a male who they thought was the suspect. Following this, they “took him to the ground.” A Provo officer assisted in detaining him, according to the press release.
Officers quickly found out this was not the suspect, but rather a 16-year-old juvenile.
Police released the 16-year-old boy. Following this, they immediately communicated with his family who was present at the Arena.
A short time later, the press release states, bondsmen were able to locate and apprehend the correct suspect without further incident.
