HURRICANE, Utah — Over three dozen children got to “Shop with a Cop” in the Hurricane City Police Department’s back-to-school event.
Officers took 38 kids from 18 families on a trip to shop at Kohl’s Saturday morning. The department said that the store manager and several employees even opened the store an hour early to allow them free range in the empty store.
This event is part of the Shop with a Cop program. Though it began as an annual Christmas event, the program has since expanded. Generous donations have allowed the department to hold a second event at the beginning of the new school year. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said this event benefits both the kids and the officers, and that “it is a chance for the officers to give back to their community and donate their time to a child in need.”
In a Facebook post, the department said they reached out to their principals and counselors to obtain a list of students who could benefit from this program. Photos on the post show officers and children browsing the isles for clothes, shoes, and backpacks.
“We can only hope the kids had as much fun as our Officers did!” the post said.
