LAYTON, Utah — A man is in the hospital after an officer-related shooting incident Wednesday morning.

According to the Layton Police Department officers arrived at the Layton Meadows apartments on an unrelated call when they encountered a man with a rifle.

Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman said they were at the complex investigating the other call just after 4:30 a.m. when they spotted the suspect on his balcony with a rifle. An hour-long standoff ensued and ended with police shooting the man.

“He was pointing that rifle all over the courtyard right there, outside his apartment at a bunch of other apartments. And our officers were engaging with him, trying to get him to put that down for upwards of an hour,” said Lyman.

According to Lyman the suspect “seemed really distraught” and talked about wanting officers to shoot him.

“Our officers had the containment set up and had SWAT responding to assist, as all that was still going on. One of the officers in that containment position fired and the suspect ended up being shot. He’s in serious condition now taken to a hospital in Salt Lake,” said Lyman.

Layton man shot identified

Late Wednesday night, Layton police identified the man as 31-year-old Nathan Barker.

According to a press release from Layton police Wednesday night, the officer directly involved in the shooting is a deputy with the Davis County Sheriff’s Office. The release says the deputy was assisting Layton police as one of the containment officers.

The critical incident protocol team is taking over the investigation.
