EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — An Eagle Mountain garage fire displaced nine people on Sunday.
Benjamin Porter, the public information officer for Unified Fire Authority, said that charging batteries increases the likelihood of fires.
“When you think of our garages, they are generally dangerous. There’s a lot of stuff in there that will burn,” Porter said.
Chargers and batteries for power tools, recreational vehicles, and E-Bikes, can all cause problems. Sometimes it’s overheating. Sometimes it’s combustion.
Oil-soaked rags are also a hazard. Often, people work on projects with flammable liquid and supplies get left out. They can combust or catch fire easily if something gets overheated.

Garage fire prevention

According to Porter, there are ways to reduce the risk of a garage fire igniting.
Porter said not to leave active chargers unattended for extended periods. If a battery has finished charging, unplug it.
Porter said that “no one ever thinks it’s going to be them.  No one ever thinks it’s going to be their garage.”
Additionally, store batteries in protective boxes. Fireproof shelving can hold flammable items. Do not store flammable liquids near a heat source. The heat increases the likelihood that they will ignite.
Make sure you have access to a fire extinguisher, just in case a fire breaks out. Fire extinguishers can handle a small fire, however, they won’t put out a larger fire.
“If it’s really taking off, just get out of there, because it’s going to burn hot and it’s going to burn fast,” said Porter.
According to Porter, the fire door on the Eagle Mountain garage was one of the reasons the home was able to be saved.
