PROVO, Utah — After a Deseret News article came out this week about the struggling Sub for Santa program, generous Utahns stepped in.

At the beginning of the week, it looked like over 350 families who applied for the United Way of Utah County Sub for Santa program would not be receiving any help.

This year they received more applications than ever before. Bill Hulterstrom, the president and CEO of United Way of Utah County, attributed inflation and housing costs to the struggle many families are facing.

But following the Deseret News article, concerns about not having enough sponsors are gone.

“We started to get an avalanche of nice, phenomenal, families and people who wanted to step up and help,” said Hulterstrom.

Now, the program has more sponsors than they need.

“We’ve covered all the families and we actually have an additional 80 volunteers that will step up if there are any additional holds,” said Hulterstrom

In the best way, the work to fulfill donations has exhausted the United Way of Utah County team. They’re working tirelessly in their warehouse to get goods and donations delivered.

Many volunteers get to deliver the Sub for Santa items in person and come away having gained lifelong friends.

Other volunteers were once recipients of the program. Now they can participate in a beautiful, full-circle moment.

“Miracles do happen,” said Hulterstrom.

We want to hear from you.
