SALT LAKE CITY — Newly released census data ranks Utah at the top for housing growth three years in a row.
Utah’s housing units increased by 2.5% from July 2022 and July 2023 according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Mallory Bateman at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute offers some insight.
“There’s a lot of apartment growth in Salt Lake County, and Salt Lake City specifically,” she said.
Bateman points to building permits going in right before the market took a turn. However, she said Utah is still far from a solution to its ongoing housing crisis.
“That doesn’t change the picture of the pinch-point people are feeling with finding housing,” she said. “But, we do have a lot of new apartments coming online and then we do have some strong single-family housing unit growth.”
Where in Utah tops the community growth list? They’re all Utah county cities. This list includes Lehi, Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Trailing just behind them is St. George.
