SALT LAKE CITY — This is why we can’t have nice things. In an act of brotherhood between nations New York City and Dublin Ireland each put a public art installation on the street. A pair of portals that look just like the time machine in any science fiction movie. But instead of a tunnel — the hole is a TV Screen where New Yorkers can see a live video from Dublin and the Irish can see New York.
But after just a few days it’s been turned off.
Turned off — because of inappropriate behavior.
Inappropriate? A guy in Dublin held up a picture of the World Trade Center on fire for the New Yorkers to see. People in New York were twerking and mooning the camera. Women lifting their shirts. To the surprise of nobody.
This experiment in brotherhood was a cosmic failure. But at 5th and 23rd in New York, what did they expect? This sort of thing has been happening there forever.
Times change. But people don’t. So they’re trying to figure out software that’ll keep the portal clean and give brotherhood another shot.
