SALT LAKE CITY — Memorial Day is the unofficial start to camping season and fire officials are urging the people to prevent human-caused wildfires.
According to the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands, hot and dry temperatures are expected in early June.
“It’s crucial we remain vigilant and keep wildfire risk at the top of our minds this year. So, let’s all do our part and exercise good Fire Sense and keep Utah wildfire-free,” said Prevention and Communications Coordinator, Kayli Guild in a press release.
The release went on to say that an abundant dry grass and shrubs in many places has created extreme wildland fire conditions.
Tips to prevent human-caused wildfires
Cars and trailers can cause roadside fires without the driver’s knowledge. It is important that safety chains are not dragging, wheel bearings are well greased. Tires should be properly inflated to help prevent a blown tire. A rogue spark can cause a big fire.
Additionally, campfires should be extinguished completely before left unattended. The DNR says be prepared with a bucket of water and a shovel. And to use the “Douse, Stir, Check for Heat, Repeat” method to ensure the fire is out.
Although there are currently, no fire restrictions in effect, campers should check for restrictions before arriving at UtahFireInfo.gov.
