SALT LAKE CIY — This past Saturday evening two 18-year-old hikers found themselves trapped on the wrong side of Little Cottonwood Creek.
The pair of hikers had intended to climb Pfeifferhorn by the Red Pine trails, but the terrain had become difficult, so they decided to return to the Maybird Gulch Trail.
The Maybird Gulch Trail is 7.6 miles that takes a hiker out and back. The trail is known to be challenging and takes about 4 hours and 32 minutes to complete.
Red Pine Lake and Little Cottonwood Creek also stand in the way. The hikers found themselves trapped by Little Cottonwood Creek.
When Salt Lake County arrived, they considered rescuing the men by helicopter or by hiking back up the trail. However, neither seemed to be the best solution.
They opted for a rope system to pull rescuers and hikers over the high-water levels of the creek.
With their shuttle system, everyone was safely on the right side of the creek. According to a Facebook post from Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, no one even got wet and were headed home by 2:00 a.m.
