SALT LAKE CITY — Restriping projects have begun on highways in northern Utah. When the project is complete, drivers will see the familiar white dashed line followed by a black line.

The new lines, called “tiger tail striping” are intended to add contrast to the familiar white stripes.

“That really allows the lane markings to pop and stand out from the whiter-colored concrete,” said UDOT Spokesperson John Gleason. “That kind of distinguish[es] itself from the color of the pavement.”

The overall goal is to improve visibility and driver security across Utah all year long.

“It’s a really unsafe feeling if you’re out there and the lines are disappearing,” Gleason said, “and that’s something, with this type of project, that we’re trying to improve.”

A new way to apply reflective tape on lane stripes

Along with being more visible, Gleason said the tape used for tiger tail striping is more durable. And that has to do with 1/4-inch grooves cut into the pavement before the stripe is applied.

“We’re grooving it (the reflective tape)… into the pavement. That allows the plows to safely pass over the lane markings without necessarily taking off the striping.”

This week, crews will be restriping at night on the Spaghetti Bowl in Salt Lake City, where I-15, I-80 and SR-201 all converge.

Other areas UDOT expects to restripe this week include the westbound I-80 collector ramp, eastbound SR-201, I-15 in Midvale and US-89.

Crews are also scheduled to apply the new lane striping in Weber and Box Elder counties.
