UTAH COUNTY, Utah— Alpine School District’s proposed split will not be on November’s ballot after being blocked by the Utah Legislature this week.
In the special session on Wednesday, legislators voted to pass a bill that prevents local school boards from initiating a process to divide a district, but cities still can.
This bill was introduced to clarify the ballot for voters.
One reason they did this is to prevent confusion. This is because two interlocal Alpine District splits will already be voted on the November ballot.
Another reason is that if all three split proposals were approved by voters, there would be no process to determine which would be implemented.
The Alpine school district split will still be voted on only by citizens in cities included in the interlocal splits.
To this, bill sponsor Representative Brady Brammer said, “There is a lot of fighting as to whether the split should happen or not, that is not this bill”. Brammer expresses this bill will help prevent confusion.
Lawmakers say this bill is temporary. School districts will be able to initiate split district proposals after a prioritization system is created.
