SALT LAKE CITY — In the newest reiteration of “see something, say something,” the FBI is asking people to be on the lookout for signs someone could be contemplating mass violence.
There’s been a huge increase in mass violence over the past 20 years. But the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit says there are usually signs ahead of time.
Shohini Sinha, Special Agent in charge of the Salt Lake City Field Office, says there are 10 signs to watch out for. Among them are obsessive interest in prior attacks, seeing violence as a way to solve problems, and increasing isolation from family and friends.
“Mass shooters do not just snap,” Sinha said. “They consider, they plan and they prepare for their attacks over time. Sometimes as long as years.”
Now the FBI is asking family and friends to report if they notice anyone who may be on the so-called “pathway to violence.”
Sinha says there’s a national FBI tipline, but you can also tell local law enforcement, or just someone you trust. But, no matter what, be sure to tell someone.
