SALT LAKE CITY — Local non-profit Go Unite has invited Salt Lake and Davis County community members to volunteer at its Trash Pick Up Day events.

In all, Go Unite hopes its volunteers will clean up 3,840 pounds of trash, per a press release.

The first Trash Pick Up Day is June 13. It will take place in Salt Lake City’s Memory Grove Park from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

On August 10, the nonprofit will return to Memory Grove Park for a second event which begins at noon.

Then, on September 14, Go Unite will host a third Trash Pick Up Day at Centerville Community Park. Like the two events prior, it will run from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Those interested in signing up for an event can do so on the nonprofit’s website.

Necessities such as trash bags and gloves will be provided on a first-come-first-served basis during the events.

“This clean-up series provides an opportunity to preserve the community, as both a direct way to improve, [and] exercise ownership of its shared places,” read the press release.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Go Unite cites research showing that volunteering can help preserve communities.

According to Western Connecticut State University, volunteering can also help people strengthen or build new connections with others in their community. Those connections could lead to expanded friendship circles and professional networks, and helping people improve their social skills.

Volunteering can help people feel a boost of self-confidence. Doing good for others can increase a volunteer’s self-perception, while also helping them be part of something larger.

Finally, HelpGuide.org said that participating in volunteer work that you find meaningful can help you feel more relaxed or energized. Doing work that suits your interests and personality can give you a much-needed break from your day-to-day routine.
