SALT LAKE CITY– Millcreek is one of many cities opting for drone shows over fireworks displays this year.
Millcreek’s drone show will happen tonight at Millcreek Common. The show will run from 6-10 p.m.
Last year more than eight thousand people showed up at the park, Millcreek Community life events manager Rachel Nasse said.
Will drone shows replace fireworks?
Drone shows have grown in popularity over the years as Utah is still dealing with extreme fire danger.
According to Verge Aero, a drone light show is a display of synchronized drones. They are programmed to form a variety of images and animations in the sky.
“Drones are kind of a softer, gentler version in cities where homes are in close proximity. And noise pollution, and pollution, in general, can have adverse effects,” Nasse said.
What’s the appeal?
Fireworks can affect communities and animals. “We got in a lot of the input from our community that, dogs are affected, and that there are some PTSD associated with fireworks with our veterans,” Nasse said.
Since they don’t use fire or explosions, drone shows are safer.
Additionally, they provide a more environmentally friendly show. Per Earth.org, fireworks produce particulate matter and emissions that are harmful to the air quality and the environment. Also, they don’t make as much waste, as fireworks have to be thrown out after use.
“I think drones are becoming more affordable and I think we can create a magnificent show for about the same cost that we are spending on fireworks” Nasse expressed.
