WASHINGTON — A United States District Court judge has dismissed the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case saying ” the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith violated the Constitution.”
The classified documents case accused the former president of illegally storing documents at Mar-a-Lago. Additionally, he was accused of obstructing recovery efforts from the FBI.
According to the Associated Press, the decision can be appealed or overturned by a higher court.
The dismissal of the case is a legal victory for Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign. It comes after a weekend assassination attempt that took place at one of his campaign rallies over the weekend.
Additionally, he is preparing to accept the Republican party’s presidential candidate nomination in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Republican National Convention begins today, according to CNN.
Trump’s legal trouble
The classified documents case is just one of four criminal cases that Trump has faced.
In May, he was found guilty in a hush money trial. However, sentencing has been postponed by the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity.
Another case has accused the former president of working to overturn the 2020 election. Similar to the classified documents case, it was brought by Jack Smith.
Smith is a former U.S. attorney, per ABC News.
The fourth case accuses Trump of conspiring to overturn election results in Georgia’s 2020 election race. Trump plead not guilty. BBC reported that a date has not been set for the trial.
