Australia implements ‘right to disconnect’ law

AUSTRALIA — A new law in Australia gives workers the “right to disconnect” from work. The law went into effect on Monday. 

 

What does the right to disconnect mean?

Per the Fair Work Ombudsman website, “Eligible employees have the right to refuse employer or third-party contact outside of working hours in some circumstances.”

According to ABC Australia, it is common to work overtime without being paid. Additionally, many jobs expect employees to be available after hours.

The law applies to businesses of 15 or more employees. Additionally, it will cover smaller businesses next year.
