WASHINGTON TERRACE, Utah — A two-year debate over backyard chickens remains ongoing in the Weber County city of Washington Terrace. A group of residents has been asking the city to change the backyard chicken rules, but a hearing on Thursday did not lead to a resolution.
At a public hearing Thursday night, the Planning Commission discussed some areas they could compromise on reducing the size of the lot that someone can have in order to have chickens.
Cal McCrary has lived there for 45 years and said the chickens aren’t the actual problem, it’s control.
“I’m not pro-chickens, I’m not anti-chicken. But I am for allowing my neighbors to live their lives,” McCrary said.
The City Council will have the final say in allowing chickens, but Planning Commission members think this is the closest they’ve ever been to a resolution.
Planning Commissioner Amy Morgan said she’s optimistic they will be able to vote on the issue at their next meeting.
“We’re closer than ever before, at least on the Planning Commission level,” Morgan said.
