AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Polaris High School will be opening the first Teen Center in Utah County to provide support for students in extreme hardship.
Hannah Figueiredo, the Polaris High School principal, said that this Teen Center comes as a huge relief.
“I often worry as a school administrator that students will stay home because they’re facing hardship and adversity,” Figueiredo said. “Now I am confident that our students are choosing to come to school despite hardship and adversity because they know their needs will be met.”
Meeting needs at Polaris High School
Polaris HS is a referral-only alternative school with a smaller student body and an alternative class schedule. Currently, Polaris has about 180 students in grades 11-12 from across Alpine School District.
“I’m most excited that our students who have extreme events and hardships come to school because they know they will have resources to help them succeed,” Figueiredo said.
The new Teen Center will expand upon the school’s mission of supporting students in difficult situations. Laundry facilities, access to toiletries, and other supplies will all be provided.
According to a press release, the Teen Center will also provide opportunities for students to learn life skills. Some of these skills include organization, self-regulation, independence, and gratitude.
The Zen Den
The school had previously established a facility called the Zen Den as a student wellness resource. The Zen Den is designed as a relaxing environment where students under stress can calm themselves in a safe environment.
With the creation of the new Teen Center, the Zen Den has been moved and upgraded.
“Our overall vision is to support our students.” said Teen Center Coordinator Linda McCoy. “And give them a safe space to provide all of the very basic needs that they might need to help them be successful at school.”
The school will host a public open house on October 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..
