SALT LAKE CITY — Anyone planning to get a permit to cut down a live Christmas tree may be too late. Permits for live trees in the Heber-Kamas area sold out within just three hours of being available.
The good news is, several areas around the Wasatch Front are still selling permits.
Forest Supervisor of the Uintah Wasatch Cache National Forest, David Whittekiend said he’s not surprised how popular it is to load up the kids and cut down a tree.
“It’s just a fantastic recreation activity. A chance for families to go out and … find that perfect tree. It’s a traditional family activity and we support that,” he said.

Preparing for winter conditions is also important. Whittekiend said people should expect the unexpected.
“They definitely need to be prepared for winter conditions. Every year we do have people who will get out and drive down roads they shouldn’t be on, in vehicles that might not be prepared for winter roads and get stuck,” he said.
Additionally, Whittekiend recommended packing extra winter clothes and food just in case.
Visitors should check the forest service’s website to get a permit and check the regulations for cutting down a tree.
