SALT LAKE CITY — The Granite School District has experienced a large data breach.
The Granite School District confirmed the data breach happened about a month ago. The district alerted parents and staff as soon as they found out. Officials are still investigating how and what type of data was taken.
One cybersecurity expert said he found some of that data on the dark web.
George Kounalis has worked in cybersecurity for four years. He said in his free time he keeps an eye on the dark web to see what types of data hackers are going after.
He was able to find 14 archived files from the Granite School District that totaled to over two terabytes of stolen data.
Kounalis said the site had things like passport photos and W-9 forms, but he isn’t sure what else could be in the files. He said ransomware groups normally go after companies they know have lots of money.
This attack, Kounalis said, follows a new trend.
“More recently they are going after school districts, health care facilities, a lot of these different kinds of organizations…”
