PROVO — Searchers recovered the body of a four-year-old girl Tuesday after an accident on the Provo River.
Police say Brenda DeDios, 34, of West Jordan, jumped in after her daughter, London, fell into the water near Bridal Veil Falls Monday afternoon. Four other adults also jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue the little girl.
Three of those bystanders were able to get back out of the river, but DeDios and Sean Thayne, 30, of Sandy, were caught up in the swift-moving water. Both were taken to the hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead shortly later.
“A lot of people are emotionally involved in this and distraught by what has happened,” Knutzen said.
Searchers recovered London DeDios’s body about a mile downstream from where she fell in. The water temperature was 45 degrees on Sunday, and the river level was very high. Knutzen said it was flowing about 11 hundred cubic feet per second.
“We are hoping to send a message to other families to be careful around these high-flowing waters,” Knutzen said. “Kids are curious. Be careful. Keep an eye on your kids.”
