SALT LAKE CITY – A new effort is being launched to try and help police agencies solve violent crimes.  It’s named after a well-known Utah figure whose murder has never been solved.

Sherry Black was found dead inside her bookstore in November of 2010.  To this day, her killer hasn’t been caught.  Her son in law, Greg Miller, says the time since her death has been painful for their family.  He says, “We have been frustrated that here we are, six and a half years later, and we still don’t know who killed Sherry.”

“We have been frustrated that here we are, six and a half years later, and we still don’t know who killed Sherry,” Miller says.

The Millers announced the Sherry Black Education Foundation designed to help police agencies learn the latest techniques in sharing information to help them solve violent crimes.  Heidi Miller says, “It’s a good way to focus my pain and just try to help others.”

The foundation is hosting a three-day symposium with experts in crime scene analysis and criminal profiling as their keynote speakers. It’s scheduled for June 26-30 in Sandy.

“If we can give back in some way and help someone else not have to go through what we’re going through, that would bring me comfort,” she says.

On the final day of the conference, two experts will give one-on-one consulting sessions to review cold cases to bring new ideas into the investigation.
