Family, police describe worrisome behavior before American Fork man disappeared

AMERICAN FORK — Police say they are following up on pages and pages of leads, five days after the disappearance of a young husband and father.

Paul Swenson’s wife and family are also providing new details about his behavior in the days leading up to his disappearance July 27th. He was last seen at his home in American Fork. His wife’s car was later found abandoned in a Salt Lake City elementary school parking lot, with items inside that belong to someone else.

Police and the family fear the 30-year-old father was not in the right state of mind before vanishing. Investigators now tell KSL he had visited a doctor the day of his disappearance, complaining of chest pains.

“He wasn’t quite himself, would be the best description,” MaryAnn Swenson, Paul’s mother, says. “He’s a very happy, friendly person. And he wasn’t quite that.”

His wife told police Swenson had been “talking randomly,” and “wasn’t acting normal.”

“That’s what makes it so unusual,” Swenson’s brother, Tom, says. “That’s why we’re so confused why he left. What happened? He did seem out of sorts, but there’s nothing to a history of drug use or abuse or anything.”

Tonight, the Swenson family is planning a candlelight vigil at the Holladay rec center.

MaryAnn Swenson says she is grateful for the help from the media, police and public.

“We haven’t lost hope even though the days are going by,” she says. “We want Paul to come home.”

If you have any information or have seen Paul Swenson, please contact police.
