TREMONTON, Utah — Two teenagers will now face criminal charges for making threats to Box Elder area schools over the weekend.

What charges the two could face

We don’t know yet what charges the two students will face, but the Tremonton-Garland Police Department says criminal charges are coming down the pipeline. Police scoured eight different schools yesterday, even sending in bomb-sniffing dogs to look for explosives. They never found any.

In a post on Facebook, police say the teens who made the threats were trying to be funny.

“We have served search warrants and conducted many interviews,” wrote the police department. “It has been determined that the threats that were made were attempts at being funny, which were not funny.”

The eight schools that closed Monday were back open this morning.

How police found out about the threats

Sgt. Brian Crockett says the police department was made aware of the threat on Friday.

“There was a picture drawn on a bathroom stall of a gun with Monday’s date on it,” says Crockett. “The school put out an email saying there was going to be some precautions made, but they were still going to have school. Then Sunday night, some parents came forward and said, ‘hey, we found some disturbing images on our kid’s phone’.”

Police were able to find out who the photo posts belonged to, and it turned out to be two different students. The department believes the two’s photos are even separate from what was scribbled in the bathroom stall. Meaning there’s a possible third student in the mix here.

“We are still investigating that and we may never know,” says Crockett. “Who knows how long it had been there before it was reported. Dozens and dozens of kids used that bathroom every day.”

We want to hear from you.
