Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness with multiple services that revitalize our community. The Salt Lake Valley Chapter began in 1986 and is changing lives and building neighborhoods one family at a time. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds houses with the help of homeowner families. The homes are affordable to low-income families because the houses are modest, built largely by volunteers and the families themselves, and are sold at no-profit with a no-interest mortgage. This offers a hand up, not a hand out.

Less than half of young children in the U.S. are read to daily. Families living in poverty often lack the money to buy new books or have limited access to libraries. Parents who weren’t read to as children themselves may not realize the value of reading to their own children. Reach Out and Read is a nonprofit organization that gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care, and encouraging families to read aloud together. Parents trust and value the advice they receive from their children's medical provider.
