When 5-year old Kimmie's Frozen scooter was stolen, Officer Morgan could relate. Having an 8-year old daughter himself, he swooped to the rescue and bought Kimmie a new Frozen scooter out of his own pocket.
Aurora City is a very small community in the Northern part of Sevier County. We have a very small, part time police department but that doesn't always mean that our problems are small or part-time. Established in 1966, Crossroads Urban Center is a multi-faith, community based organization that assists low-income Utahns to meet basic survival needs and address essential issues affecting quality of life. The Center runs one of Utah's busiest emergency food pantries and a thrift store providing items at low or no cost. They support community organizing efforts, facilitate holiday food programs, and offer a variety of emergency assistance.
The Holladay Arts Council provides access to the arts for residents of Holladay and surrounding areas. One of their programs, Healing Through Art, strives to promote and create awareness and understanding of what refugees experience. They offered art workshops to more than 100 people from five of the most in-need refugee communities in the valley.
How can we assist those with disabilities achieve greater independence and enhance their living skills? One organization assisting in this area is the Utah Independent Living Center, a non–residential facility that has been providing services to enhance the independence of people with disabilities since 1982.
The People’s Health Clinic is a volunteer-driven nonprofit clinic that provides medical services to uninsured residents of Summit and Wasatch counties. It’s funded by donations by local residents, businesses, churches, and governments. Patients are asked to donate $20 per visit, but whatever they can give is welcome. No one is turned away because of inability to pay.
SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and has been helping small businesses succeed for more than 50 years. It’s made up of senior executive and business owner volunteers who have decided to give back by offering free one-on-one mentoring to those interested in starting, growing, or maintaining their business. The Salt Lake Chapter is made up of around 40 volunteer mentors who have the knowledge and experience to help small business owners get the help they need. Their intention is to provide free advice and mentoring “for the life of your business.”
This past summer, a new Children's Justice Center that provides a safe and comfortable environment for interviewing child victims and their families was opened in Kanab. The new homelike center is a place for children and families who are experiencing the crisis and chaos that comes with the disclosure of physical or sexual abuse of a child.
The Riverton Senior Center is an active aging recreational facility for adults 60 years and older. The center offers a comprehensive range of programs to enlighten, educate, and enrich the lives of seniors. The center provides free exercise and health classes, learning and creative opportunities to maintain brain health, social opportunities to prevent isolation, and a nutritious meal five days a week for a suggested donation of $3. Transportation is available to the Riverton Senior Center for residents of Riverton, Herriman, and Bluffdale to participate in activities.
In Utah, one in five children is unsure where his or her next meal will come from. To help, two Salt Lake County Library branches – Kearns and Magna – partnered with the Utah Food Bank on a nutrition program called Kids' Café. It was developed to ensure that youth in their communities receive a meal each day Monday through Friday.
