Three in ten students in the Provo City School District didn't graduate from high school in 2013. Teens Act is an organization helping more students graduate through personalized mentoring during and after school at Provo and Independence High Schools.
During this holiday season, Select Health would like to acknowledge all of the local organizations and volunteers making a difference in our communities across the state.
Salt Lake Community Action Program addresses many factors affecting an individual's ability to rise out of poverty, including housing, adult education and employment, utilities expenses, food insecurity, and early education. The program works with the surrounding community and other organizations to create effective solutions for those most in need.
Friday's Kids Respite is an organization that provides respite care to families with special needs children in Orem, Salem, Lehi, and St. George. Respite care is the temporary care of children that provides a short period of rest or relief to their usual caregivers.
Participating in regular respite care enables those with special needs children to better manage the stress in their families' lives. On their respite Fridays, families arrive, meet with the nurse, and are introduced to the volunteers who will be paired, one-on-one, to play with their children in a safe and fun environment. Then, many parents spend needed personal time with their spouse or other children. When they return, they are more able to care for their families.
The Children's Center provides comprehensive mental health care to enhance the emotional well-being of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families. One out of 47 Utah children have been identified as having an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the highest rate in the country. They offer an innovative group treatment for parents and children called PLAY 2 Learn. It gives parents the skills to help their children successfully interact with others and helps children develop social, emotional, and language skills necessary for learning.
March 21st, which is the 21st day of the third month, is World Down Syndrome Day. The date is significant because the triplication of the 21st chromosome causes Down syndrome. The Utah Down Syndrome Foundation was established to help those with the condition achieve their educational potential, enhance their self esteem, and enjoy social interaction. Their mission is to promote awareness and appreciation for the unique talents and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. They provide outreach and education to parents and peers, promote community acceptance and inclusion, and disseminate information to health care providers.
Since 1967, Kostopulos Dream Foundation (known as Camp Kostopulos) has been dedicated to improving the lives of people of all abilities through education, recreation, and growth opportunities. Services are available to everyone, including those with physical, cognitive, and emotional impairments, as well as special medical needs. Their year-round programs provide opportunities for participants to improve physical fitness levels, learn healthy lifestyle skills, access the great outdoors, and foster independence.
Nurture the Creative Mind Foundation is an organization in Ogden dedicated to empowering youth through partnering education, creativity, and character development. They establish self-empowerment and value in youth to develop their skills through creative and artistic expression.
