Rep. Ben McAdams, Democrat for 4th District

Ben McAdams, currently representing Utah’s 4th Congressional District as a Democrat and seeking re-election, was born Dec. 5, 1974, and grew up in West Bountiful, Utah. McAdams received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah and his Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School.
McAdams and his wife, Julie, live in Salt Lake City with their four children. He served a mission in Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
McAdams first worked in politics as a senior advisor to former Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. In 2009, he won a special election to replace Scott McCoy in the Utah Senate, then won a four-year term of his own in 2010. McAdams then ran for and won the office of Salt Lake County Mayor in 2012. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018, narrowly beating incumbent Republican Rep. Mia Love in what became one of the most expensive political contests in Utah state history.
The only Democrat representing Utah in Congress, McAdams voted for Stephanie Murphy over Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker. In office, he has championed balanced budget legislation, and opposes nuclear testing. McAdams describes himself as a moderate Democrat, and has occasionally sided with Republicans on issues such as the “Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”
