SALT LAKE CITY — With the first of the month just a couple of days away, many people who’ve lost income are worried about paying rent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Utah Apartment Association, which represents big multi-unit landlords, has a rent deferral plan in place that you can see on their website. Small private landlords still have their own mortgage payments and expenses. Glenn Bailey with the Crossroads Urban Center says they need help too.

“We think that the governor should be acting and announcing a statewide moratorium and we’re working with the banking community to try and help small landlords,” Bailey said.

Governor Gary Herbert’s office says that idea is definitely under discussion, but they don’t have a firm plan to announce just yet.

How To Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus

COVID-19 coronavirus is transmitted from person to person. It is a virus that is similar to the common cold and the flu. So, to prevent it from spreading:

  • Wash hands frequently and thoroughly, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t touch your face.
  • Keep children and those with compromised immune systems away from someone who is coughing or sneezing (in this instance, at least six feet)
  • If there is an outbreak near you, practice social distancing (stay at home, instead of going to the movies, sports events, or other activities.)
  • Get a flu shot.
